Dedication

As I reflect on this two-year process of writing this text, I would like to dedicate it to my family, my wife Maureen for her support and patience. Many days and nights were spent in the office away from her and she never complained, only encouraged me.

I also dedicate this to my children, Lauren and Delainey, and son-in-law Michael. Your thoughts and encouragement were motivating toward the completion of this text.

Finally, I dedicate this text to my late brother Kevin. I know he would have been proud, and I miss him every day. He was one of the most innovative people I have known!

Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is born an artist, the challenge is to remain an artist as one gets older.” My wife, Joni, is an artist, innovator, and creator. Not only has she inspired me since the day I first met her, but she has challenged me every day to do my best. I strive every day to not only remain creative, and innovative, but to grow, and in growing, help solve the world’s issues. Joni believes that any issue can be solved as long we think differently and are not afraid to be creative. An artist who sees the world for what it should be, and asks questions, begins to paint a picture of a better world. Through innovation and creativity that picture can become a reality, a better world. For these reasons, and many more, I dedicate this book to my wife Joni, a far better person than me.

I dedicate this book to my dear friend Liz McCormick, without whom innovation and human-centered design would not be such an important part of so many people’s daily practice, including my own. What a journey—through thick and thin, from cacophony to crickets, to the preferred futures near and far.

Thank you, Liz. I appreciate you so.
